I am very please to announce that after 51 free portrait studio events over the last 8 years the portrait count for Jason Wilde’s Free Portrait Studio has finally reached my ‘2000 portraits made’ goal that I set myself at the beginning of the project.

The portrait count now stands at 2224

OCTOBER: JASON WILDE’S FREE PORTRAIT STUDIO

Boys and Girls of Camden and beyond.

This is an open invitation to visit the 51st and FINAL Jason Wilde’s Free Portrait Studio being held in the world famous Hawley Arms on Sunday 15th October.

Sadly this is the last free portrait studio event and the last chance to become part of this historically important visual archive of people in and around the London Borough of Camden.

So far 1931 portraits have been made and Sundays final event should see me reach my 2000 portrait target – which was one goal I set myself at the start of the project.

The portrait studio is free and open to anyone over 5 and all participants are able to receive a free black and white portrait from their shoot.

TIME & PLACE
Once again the World famous Hawley Arms in Camden Town plays host to my mobile studio.

The Hawley Arms (top floor private room)

The Hawley Arms is served by 4 train stations, Camden Town, Chalk Farm, Kentish Town, Kentish Town West and Camden Road.

The Hawley Arms serves good beer and great food (by all accounts their fish finger sandwich is a blinder!)

MAY: JASON WILDE’S FREE PORTRAIT STUDIO MAGAZINE
I am double chuffed to announce the launch of my Jason Wilde’s Free Portrait Studio magazine. The ongoing nature of the project and the number of images already made offer up a wealth of interesting editing opportunities and JWFPS 01 is the first in a series of magazines that will explore this evolving archive of portraits.

JWFPS started life in 2009 under a railway bridge in Chalk Farm, London. Since then, 41 makeshift portrait studios have been set-up inside a variety of venues in and around the London Borough of Camden. Visitors to these venues were invited to have their portrait taken in return for a free A4 black and white portrait. So far over 1800 people have accepted that invitation. Equal parts English history, cultural anthropology and human narrative, the photographs eschew the overtly conceptual motifs of much contemporary portraiture in favour of the descriptive powers of the medium. This on-going body of work aims to reflect the complex nature of contemporary English society through multiple individual portraits.

44 pp, 170 gsm
20 colour images
220 X 280 mm
Softcover, 300 gsm
1. Edition 04/2017

JWFPS 01 was published by Butchers Hook books – an independent publishing company set up by myself to publish, promote and distribute my photography projects.

MARCH: VERA & JOHN AND THE PHOTOGRAPHERS GALLERY BOOKSHOP
Im well chuffed to announce that ‘Vera & John’ has made it onto the shelves of The Photographers Gallery Bookshop.

FEBRUARY: VERA & JOHN AND THE GUARDIAN
‘Vera & John’ was featured in The Guardian this weekend with a really nice article by Giuilia Rhodes. They also sent a photographer to mum and dads house to photograph the three of us – which went down very well with the folks. I think they like the attention they are receiving – especially the mum. She has been stopped and congratulated a fair few times while shopping on Camden High Street by folk that know of the project.

FEBRUARY: VERA & JOHN AND ROBERT ELMS
‘Vera & John’ was featured on BBC Radio London’s Robert Elms show this morning. They kindly invited me in to talk about the book and how it came together. Even though Robert Elms had been knocked off of his bike on the way to work and was in pain due to a couple of broken bones, he was still very professional and put me at ease with his easy going chit-chat.

FEBRUARY: VERA & JOHN AND SOME LOVELY FEEDBACK
Vera & John seems to be going down very well with those that have come into contact with the book/project………….“Probably the sweetest, funniest book published so far this year” / “A wonderful project with my 3 favourite L’s – language, love and London” / “A moving and important project” / “Truly lovely, the bits of life and love that get forgotten” / “A fab portrait of family life. Written on the back of everyday envelopes, Vera leaves notes to John. Funny, ordinary, addictive & touching!” / “I laughed out loud at the note about the barbecue bar! Brilliant idea for a book” / “Absolutely wonderful. The whole thing made me smile—a lot” / “If you haven’t got a copy of this unique, sweet and touching photographic story of Vera and John get your hands on one” / “Thank god there’s always the real world. It has become so easy to forget that” / “Lovely idea for a book. We should all do this. Before we self delete. Is there a way to save and print our texts?” / “Absolutely, Beautiful Idea. Beautiful Life” / “Anyone who can’t see the warmth and family values I feel sort of sad for. This is real family lucky for them” / “Vera & John – a reminder that life, like love, is in the little things”

FEBRUARY: VERA & JOHN COMES TO LIFE
Finally!! My first photobook! After 10 years of collecting and photographing notes, and after a month-long fundraising campaign, ‘Vera & John, has become a proper case bound photobook.

It took a fair bit of persuading to get my Mum to agree to allow me to share her personal notes with the world and even now the book has been published she is still a little embarrassed and bewildered by the whole thing. Dad just keeps chuckling.

Vera & John was published by Butchers Hook books – an independent publishing company set up by myself to publish, promote and distribute my photography projects.
